About Munich

Reading a big article on Munichs art scene in the beautiful magazine "Elephant",
"Elephant", Issue 13, Article by Katya & Alexei Tylevich
it reminded me of Munich, sure. But it's not what it feels like to me. It's very interesting though. The writer seemed to like it here and the introduction draws a beautiful picture of this town.
I wondered, maybe I don't really know the city I grew up in...

Then in the interviews (with people like Benjamin Röder, Mirko Borsche, Sonja Herpich...) I found more of the Munich I know.
One thing they all seemed to agree on -it's also the headline of the article-
"An artist in Munich is necessarily a 'working' artist":
Most of the artists in Munich are so busy with their day jobs, working only to be able to afford their expensive studios*, they hardly even find the time or money go look for inspiration, let alone travel.
And what is an artist if he is not traveling, not moving?
(*In Munich an old house with cheap studio space will be torn down in the blink of an eye to be replaced by a lucrative new building.)
It seems a lot of artists in Munich just live to "appear" like artists, but don't really have the chance to get anything done, while being busy socializing with "potential clients" in the hip bars and clubs and earning the money to be able to do so.

Another agreement is, that if in Munich you want to be part of a subculture, you have to create one.
There are no ghettos, no bad neighborhoods, it's all clean, safe
and comfortable!
Maybe that's the reason why a lot of them stay.
A place can easily become too comfortable, especially for artists. It takes away the drive, the urge to find the new.

"…a culture that's a lot like Disneyland,.., and Disneyland is somebody else's built up fantasy" (Quote by Ingo Maurer from the article)

It made me think: I am happy to be away, at least for some time. And maybe now that I don't really live here anymore, I'll get to see a different Munich when I come to visit.
I've heard these kinds of things happen
